The first woman of mathematics

11/06/2012 20:58

Today I´m gonna talk about a character that inspires me a lot, she is Hypatia of Alexandria. In the times of the Roman Empire, women participation was a very special exception, but Hypatia not only enter in the knowledge world but also reached the highest intellectual levels and taught at Rome´s Library. Hypatia was an exceptional woman who dedicated her whole life to study math, astronomy and philosophy. Is also said that Hypatia was really beautiful, she was capable to attract even his enemies. Hypatia was the first woman mathematician known.

She was considered a threat, because she hadn´t converted to Christianity (this religion was imposing at that epoch), this is the reason why she was accused to be a witch and atheist, you probably are imaging what happened later. It is said that with her death all the advances she done in math disappeared, because her disciples didn´t save them for fear to authority. This knowledge didn’t reappear until 1200 years later with the renaissance.

I found recently that a movie was produced from her story! Maybe you´re thinking the idea is kind of boring, but this is a really interesting movie in which you will see action, fights, philosophy, science, politics, secrets, romance. The movie shows the story developed in the times in which Christians take violently many territories, all this seen by hypatia´s perspective and what happened to her for witnessing such situations. This movie was made in 2009 so it has a good quality of video.

Things I love of Hypatia:

Her love of knowledge

She fight for what she wants

Her ideology talks about no violence to solve problems

Her attitude.

Well I recommend you to see this amazing movie called “Agora”, it has a trapping message and story, you won´t regret seeing it. (:

Honduras's Miraculous Rain of Fish

10/06/2012 21:56

The phenomenon of 'The Rain of Fish’ has been occurring in the Department of Yoro of Honduras each year since the mid 1800s. The occurrence has been puzzling not only the residents, but also scientists since it started. Each year witnesses report that in May or June, dark storm clouds, accompanied by thunder and lightning will appear over the horizon and move over the region. The clouds are accompanied by a very heavy rain which will last upwards of three hours. Once the rain has finished, the city streets are littered with living fish. Since 1998 a festival has been held in honor of the event in the city of Yoro.
They were able to determine that all of the fish that appear are roughly the same size, and are all the same species. What's more puzzling is that this particular species of fish do not inhabit any nearby waters.
There are many theories about what is causing this phenomenon, some are scientific, some more religious and others a little more crazy, But no explanation is a 100% sure about this phenomenon.

WHY DO BIRDS FLY IN "V" FORMATION?

02/06/2012 15:42

A lot of birds species like the geese, swans, ducks and pelicans, take a "V" formation when they exceed one kilometer in height. When they shake their wings, each bird produce an updraft wich help the bird that is coming behind to glide. So, all get benefit from the bird that goes ahead, except, the first. the first bird is the most experienced of all and knows the way.

When the leader is tired, it go to the final formation, and other take its place. The birds that are behind, squawk (they produce their own sound) to encourage the others that are front to keep the speed.

When a bird is injured, ill or tired, others get up of the formation and accompanying to help and protect. They stay with it until it is able to fly again and reach their flock.
